What Functions Must Your Coffee Table Fulfill? Coffee tables serve a variety of uses. Whilst some are used only for the display of ornaments, in many homes they have replaced the family dining table. What functions your table must fulfill should be one of the key considerations when you are selecting it. You must decide whether you need storage and if so whether you want the items you are storing to be on public display or hidden from view. Lift top coffee tables sound like a good idea but are only really useful if you intend to keep the surface clear. Otherwise each time that you need to remove or replace an item you have to clear the top of the table first. Often a coffee table with a drawer or shelf can be a more convenient choice. A coffee table will be a key purchase for your living space. It is worth investing the time and energy into choosing a table that will meet both your aesthetic and functional needs and be something that you will use and love for many years.
Scale & Size Firstly, the scale of the table is probably the most important factor, the table will anchor the room, and if its too big or too small, then the proportions of the room could be thrown off. The space where the coffee table is going will largely dictate the size, if it is to run between a sofa or chaise and the television on the opposite wall (or between 2 sofas facing) then a rectangular coffee table will complement the space, if there is a square space between a set of sofas such as a 2+3 or a corner lounge, then you could go for square, round or oversized rectangle. If you consider it should be just within reach of the main seats, it is likely to consume a decent amount of floorspace, a general rule is, it should be up to two thirds of the sofa in length, and sit at roughly the same height as the seats (with variations achieving different looks, i.e. very low will create a modern, minimalist feel).
Glass coffee tables look elegant and modern and can make a room look lighter and more airy. However, they can also represent a hazard to small children and adults alike. This is because in the US there is no requirement for glass tables to be made from tempered glass. Tempered glass is a glass that has been treated so that if shattered it splits into small, regular shaped cubes that are unlikely to cause injury. However, many tables are not made from this kind of glass. Many coffee tables are in fact made from a thicker sheet of ordinary cheaper glass. If this glass shatters it can splinter into long spikes that can easily pierce the body. For this reason it is vitally important to check when purchasing a glass coffee table whether it has been made with tempered glass. Not only should you ask the sales assistant but you should seek confirmation that their response is truthful as it can be very hard to tell what type of glass a table is made from just by looking. You might consider it unlikely that it will shatter, but people do fall, particularly children. Even sitting on a table when distracted could cause it to shatter and inflict life shattering injuries.
